Redundancy
If it was down to me, I'd be saying if you can find a way of surfing here, up this creek with two islands between you and the ocean swell... well go for it!
On that basis, I'm surprised they don't prohibit walking on the water as well.

The uncolouring of Australia
There is a startling trend that seems to be becoming a movement. Buildings are losing their colour at a cracking pace. This was once one of those gorgeous beach houses that only buckets of leftover paints from the sixties could have produced. I am not sure what making it white will do, but it will leave us just a little poorer as we pass by.
For a glimpse of what it was, check out this link:
What do you think? Restore the colour or make it crispy white?

Shutters
In my experience, shutters are usually hinged on the outside of the window. These appear to be too narrow to close over the window so perhaps they are destined to be screwed onto the wall as some kind of ignominious static decor item. What a shame.

Sold!
There are more "sold" signs around that "for sale" ones at the moment. That is a sure sign that real estate agents are doing it tough. It's one of the great ironies of that business that when property is in demand, no one wants to sell.
Perhaps we will see a gentle rise in values as those in southern capitals begin to fall.

Free.
It seems that no matter where I roam there is a free barbecue just waiting on the footpath for the taking. Just why this occurs is beyond me, but barbecues and exercise bikes must be the most discarded items on the planet. OK, in Australia then.

Fencing as I remember.
Some time ago I described the kind of fencing that was in vogue when I was a kid. This is it, although often the posts and rails were painted white before the chain wire was stapled on.
This is a really nice detail to create a period-correct look for the beach house garden.
Full marks!

What season is it again?
A few years ago, when I was desperate for a photo for the day, I'd run outside and check the state of the Frangipani. The ever changing nature of these trees always gives something to talk about, although I've never figured the seasons in which they flower, grow leaves and die off. They do it all in sync with one another, but not strictly to our calendar.
Here's the very tip of a bare tree, with new life just bursting to get out, and winter is barely on us.

It was inevitable.
Well one didn't have to be Nostradamus to predict the demise of the house on this site, actually a chat with the owners gave a fair clue as to its future. It's sad from a rich urban tapestry perspective that it had to go of course, but they are nervously waiting on commencement of their new modern and comfortable house!
Here's what it looked like last week.

Vacation Blues.
Did the colour of the car really match the surfboard and that of the caravan in days gone by?
I'm not sure, but it makes for a happy holiday methinks.

Simply Appalling
Here we build lovely new, carefully planned commercial estates and allow this to be built.
"But it's the back of the building" I hear you cry, and I say "yes it is", but it is also the main entrance since that is where one parks one's car, and what about that abomination on the roof?
I guess that's why we holiday in nice places.

Once were golf course.
The buildings are probably no more than a kilometre away as the crow flies. Between us and them is a vast, almost barren plot which is currently having lots of work done to create the new Town Centre.
A green fields centre they call it, in reference to the fact that it is being created from a clear piece of land. It will be interesting to see how much green field is left at the end of the day. The irony of its new use is that no matter how little green is left, more people will be able to access it as it is no longer the private domain of golf club members.

I think this one is pretty safe.

Tribute.
Rock and Roll George was a larger than life personality, in the days when "personalities" were different, not just talking heads on television. This car was built as a replica of George's (which is now housed in the Queensland Museum.)
Here is a short Youtube clip in memory of George.

Illusion?
Even after I took the photo I couldn't be sure that the facade wasn't being reflected in a glass front.
It's not, and I guess it goes down as the world's most complicated column.

Historically incorrect, politically better!
Ahh now here's a conundrum; the bamboo bonnet prop is a cutesy nod to beach culture, presumably from the U.S. "tiki hut" era of the sixties, because there's no bamboo grown round here.
The problem is though, to be historically correct, there'd be a chick possibly in a two piece bathing suit holding the bonnet open.... "making herself useful."
Perhaps that bit is best left forgotten!

How can you go down if you've never been up?
Ahh yes, well here we are at the base of the old lighthouse. It's a nicer view I think, than the one looking down as you can see bits of the structure and even the inside of the wall cladding.

Looking down again
The new lighthouse is more correctly the "Signalling Station", and while it's easier to climb these stairs, there's none of the romance of rickety wooden ladders.

The old lighthouse from the new.
I had to reverse the order of photographs so that the theme day shot fitted yesterday, but here is a shot I prepared earlier, of the old lighthouse, or at least a very small part of it.
Of most interest here I think are those little white dots on the horizon. They are sandhills on Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world apparently, and a gentle day sail away.

Look Down
Today's theme day is "look down" and you can see many more photographs on this theme at this link.
This photo is almost certainly the oldest stairway/ladder in the city. It is taken from the top of the old lighthouse, which was built around 1890.
There isn't much in the way of safety gear hear, so we should be grateful that its trustees are allowed to open it to the public.
