Almost monochrome
It seems to me that if you leave anything in the rain long enough, the colours will wash out of it. Here the entire ocean is starting to fade after a month in drizzle!

Somewhere to hide
In times long gone, the delivery van was the vehicle of choice for those among us who surfed. These days the "ute" seems to fill the "pick-up" role well enough!
Sure it's a little cramped, but it's dry and warm and he's left his thongs outside to keep the mattress clean!

Christmas Spirit
Today I walked the length of Caloundra's main street looking for a sign or even the merest hint of any forthcoming festivity. Apart from the odd shop interior, the place was entirely bereft of decoration or anything that hinted at just a little more cheeriness than usual for that matter. I was hoping for a shot of someone in a fur trimmed hat so I could make the obvious bitingly witty commentary, but no one obliged.
Just as all hope was lost, I saw a present sitting on a post. On investigation the post usually held up a parking meter, and the present in fact completely enveloped it.
Good on you Seligs Jewellers. Sure there's a bit of commercial intent behind all this, but in a desert of Christmas Spirit it sticks out a mile!

Almost there!
I suspect the difficulty of my task is starting to show. I think I live in one of the least involved communities in the world when it comes to outward displays of the festive mood.
It may be that the weather has been a huge dampener, or it may be that for reasons I cannot fathom the Global Financial Crisis is starting to bite, but it's not just the night before Christmas when not a creature stirs, it's been the last week or so!
Even in the Plaza today, the decorations seems uncharacteristically austere, and the music (thankfully) did not feature one jingle of sleigh bells or reference to Christmas, white or otherwise.
Strange times indeed!

Deco's
Deco is not actually a word, and before the apostrophe grinches crawl all over me, may I congratulate the authors of this sign for what I believe is to be the correct use of said punctuation mark to indicate that a contraction has occurred!
"Deco", pronounced "deck-oh" as opposed to "dee-coh" which is short for "decomposed granite road base", is actually a contraction in this case for "Decorations", and a very Aussie one it is too, ending as it does in the obligatory "oh" sound, which in this case sounds so much nicer than the "ey" ending would have!
Ahh... just a few days now until the commercial madness is over and the holiday madness truly begins.

I've seen Rudolph!
Here on the Coast, Santa's sleigh is tugged along by a monster 4WD, complete with antlers and furry red (illuminated) nose.
I'm not sure about how it lands on rooftops though.

It's beginning to look a bit like Christmas - 3
Having never seen falling snow, it was only last year in one glorious photograph I found that the impact of "icicle" lights became apparent. There's no chance of ice ever forming on them here, and Santa must get an awful heat rash, but camping is no excuse not to break out the lights!

Froth and Bubble
The residual pockets of foam among the rocks quiver with each gust of wind. While they appear to be quite colour co-ordinated, the dull beige is really just dirt and silt from the river water discharging into the sea after the storms.

Beach Textures
After the storms, the sea is messy, not huge, the water among the rocks a dirty brown, with a frosting of foam. The breeze is gentle and pleasantly warm.
Perhaps in a day or two we shall see the sun again, or perhaps we shall see more storms.

Not Old
The reflection suggests something from our colonial past. The building form is indeed borrowed from another era and another locality for that matter, but the sliding aluminium window frames are a dead give away.

Not Patina
No one's left a cake out in the rain here, just a whole bakery. If the building had been built in 1593 I'd be waxing lyrical about its romantic patina, but sadly it just looks as though it needs a clean. It's something we don't do all that well I'm afraid, maintain buildings.
At 57 years of age, it's getting old by our standards, but I suspect this one won't be around in four hundred years!

Pathology
I was going looking for some Christmas decorations in the streets, but surprisingly perhaps they aren't there .... yet. In desperation I wandered through a large shopping centre, and not surprisingly found boughs of holly and coloured glitter balls everywhere. Thankfully the endless Christmas Carols and White Christmas dreaming music have not yet infected the speakers, so the scene would not have been complete and I was saved from photographing it!
In the end, it was the pathology clinic in Maleny that caught my eye, right there in the main street. It didn't take too long to work out what the former cottage was now being used for.

Green and gold are Australia's sporting colours, derived traditionally derived from the colours of wattle flower and foliage, but after one of the wettest springs on record, it could well represent the colour of grass and dandelion flower.

Time
The first of December marks the time for many things, dressing up as Santa's helpers, selling craft work on the street, shopping for presents, getting ready for Christmas.
It's a time when everyone starts to ask where the year went, after all it's barely three weeks till Christmas.
It's also a time to get ready for summer! (Yes I've seen the pictures of snow in the Northern Hemisphere, and thought it might be about time to find lots of beach shots to warm you all up too!)
