House at Conondale - 1 of 3

I know nothing of the history of this house, but it looks as though it could do with a quick "touch up".

It's probably around a hundred years old, which is ancient for houses in this neck of the woods where the heat and humidity and UV combine to shorten building lifespan to such an extent that relative to the rest of the world the age of our houses should be measured in "dog years".

Colonial Charm

I'm not sure about the authenticity of the colour scheme, but there's been a lot of love and care lavished on the conservation of this Bed and Breakfast in Maleny, and it really does add positively to the place.

Poser

Every now an then, despite thinking that I don't really need any more photos of lizards thanks very much, I'll come across one which is just sitting there winking at the camera and well...

Why did the dragon cross the road?

Decor

When I went to college I was taught that form should follow function.   I am curious to discover the function of the cage like device in the foreground.

Perhaps it's to save cakes from giant blowflies.

Perhaps I just don't get decor and "activating space" as it is done in this post-modern era.

I kind of get the cane hampers though.

Leading with my chin

To the right of the creek we don't see the major supermarket which is so despised by locals because of the impact on the platypus in the creek.

To the left, we see the fully supported mock colonial shopping centre complete with observation boardwalk which to my untrained eye seems to have completely obliterated the bank and therefore the habitat.

Would it be cynical of me to ask if there was perhaps an agenda other than the well being of the platypus at stake?

And to think that developers are often accused of dishonesty!  (Insert winking, smiling emoticon of choice and run for cover!)

Bitter and Twisted

Here is a photograph of a large supermarket in Maleny.

You can just see, below the carpark light standard, the red of the building signage through the trees.   It is also the site of a platypus breeding area on the creek and was the subject of an intense battle, by "conservationists".

I use the parentheses advisedly because the battle was so illogical and so emotionally charged that all reason was lost, except within the court process.

I cannot say whether the water does actually taste "of supermarket" as I was told it would by one emotion charged young lady, but to the casual observer it appears that the impact has been minimal.

Till the cows come home

Janna Parmeijer's "Herd of Cows" marks the eastern entry to Maley's town centre on the site that was once the entrance to the sale yards.

The Gold cows represent the Geurnseys that were the first breed milked commercially on the range, while the Silver ones represent the herds that have been lost due to the changing economy.

The library.

The last time I posted a photograph of the library at Maleny, I may have inadvertently caused some angst by some offhanded comment about it's pretence at being something that it's not.

So rather than cause further offence by noting that I am still firmly of the belief that painting a building in a bright colour and decorating it with steel trellis does not magically transform it into a thing of well proportioned beauty.

But it is loved and used and what better outcome can there be than that for a public building?

All that glitters.

The picture I posted of this shop just two years ago, was one of a building that was doing a fine job of blending with the character of the town,

I am not convinced that the new emerging character marks a positive change, or wether we are watching an older lady trying to dress as something she is not.

Is the new signage really better?   Do we really need to know the name of the town we are in when we stand opposite the butcher's shop?   I think I liked the old version better, but then I'm at risk of being a grumpy person!

When is a suburb not a suburb?

Just a snippet of the main street in Maleny.   It seems to go on without end with it's mock colonial era frontages and its mocking modern signage.

It's a pleasant spot to visit on a weekend though, and while residents prefer perhaps to think of the town as a separate identity, the reality is that it is just another suburb of the Sunshine Coast!

Slowly changing

When last I posted a photo of this building it was in need of a clean.   I didn't really think it was in need of new signage, and while it's cheered it up a bit, the new awning is decidedly without sympathy to the old character of the town.

The new character has lots of gaudy signs though.  I am not sure that I approve.

I suspect that the new look is an opportunity lost, but it is nice to see some positive signs of business prosperity.

From Chainsaw With Love.

Sometimes I confess, that when it comes to sculpture I find some naming conventions unfathomable.  How a sphere of fibreglass resin could ever come to be called "Intergalactic Opus Seven" is beyond me.

Thankfully others are a little more explanatory.   This is Keith Gall's chainsaw sculpture - "Frog on a ball in a cage."

Tiny Library

Tucked away where everyone will see it is this tiny library.   It's actually a free book exchange with a twist.   Check out www.bookcrossing.com if you like reading and sharing books with others, perhaps you have a book that will end up here in Maleny for a while.

FIC RES - and the shiny aluminium is now pitted and grey while the red paint behind the neon will soon be just a pink streak.   Just a few years ago this was a shiny new sign.

Twilight Surfboards

There are a couple of pairs of legs in the top right of this shot.  Shortly they will come down and take the boards out for one last paddle in the chilly evening slop.

I will stay warm, with my shoes on, watching and for once not envying.

Coconuts

That's Mt Coolum over there in the haze, the "mountain" that marks the end of the airport runway.

Behind me, is the Cotton Tree Camping ground and in front, the mouth of the Maroochy River.   Sometimes I just want to pop back home and come back with my tent.

Heaven on a stick!

You can see the lights of the city from those tents, just a few hundred metres up the river.   It's a ten minute walk to Sunshine Plaza, yet you can live in nothing but a pair of board shorts or a sarong, and be oblivious to the real world.

There are worse places to have a holiday.

The camping ground at Cotton Tree is one of my favourites on the planet possibly.   Where else can you be a five minute walk from the central business district of a major(ish) commercial centre, and feel as though you have been cast away?

Urban Fabric

Every so often I take a photograph for the sake of taking a photograph.   In twenty or thirty or fifty years time, photographs like this become quite valuable to historians or the nostalgia buff.

They point out all sorts of things about the the way people lived, and built their houses, and reticulated their electricity.

So with that said, here are three buildings, four cars and a power pole at Cotton Tree.

Stylish! - City Daily Photo Portal Theme Day.

This is about as stylish as it gets round these parts.

Fancy thongs for going out.

I have five pairs actually, to suit any occasion or perhaps every occasion.  They certainly suit all my boardshorts.

Although it is difficult to imagine a photograph better demonstrating today's City Daily Photo theme "Stylish",  why not  visit the City Daily Photo Portal theme day. pages to see what "stylish" means in other parts of the world?
