Ripper!

It's not the cleanest of waves, but it's been worth the wait!©

In the washing machine

They wait and wait for the one opportunity to get back to shore, so they can come out and wait and wait again.   The seas have abated somewhat, but I recall some friends who were very good surf swimmers telling of a time they swam for several hours trying to pluck up the courage to come back in.

Good luck to them I say!

Adding to the confusion

I'm not sure what it's called when a surfer uses one foot to kick himself along in the opposite direction to the waves.

I think it's called a trick of the light.

Out of the Confusion

Occasionally among the confusion someone finds a wave that can be ridden.

Confused

The term "confused" sea is used to describe a wave action that has no regular pattern.

Like this really.

Whipping up a storm

Blue skies and showers, with an awful lot of haze from the angry looking sea.   That just about sums up yesterday at the beach, with most beaches closed, but still hundreds or more turning up to spend Christmas day on the sand.

Three metre swells kept all but the foolhardy or diehards (or both) out of the water though.

Merry Christmas

I had grand plans of finding a perfect shot to reflect the day, but in the end madness and wet weather combined to deny me any more than a few figs stuck in the boardwalk.   None the less the red berries do give some sort of vaguely Christmassy tone... don't they?

Ah well, Merry Christmas!

The night before Christmas

Christmas is a time of great joy, and sending cards to all your friends, and hanging cards you receive on the venetian blinds.

Inspired by social media, it seems that it is now entirely appropriate to announce to the world exactly where one's social standing lies.  These people for instance have 31 friends!

I hope Santa Claus is one of them!

Wipeout!

Actually no it's not a "wipeout", its a poster viewed in the reflection of a pile of Body Boards waiting in the surf shop at Dicky Beach for the holiday onslaught.

The forecast is for big swells on Christmas day too, so we shall see what we can see!

Christmas Flowers

I've never thought of Oleander as a Christmas flower before, but there it is on our footpath,  and it's almost Christmas so it must be!

It is apparently the most toxic garden plant, the Oleander, but paradoxically perhaps relatively few poisonings seem to have been recorded.   My friend Al who is a veterinary surgeon and knows about this stuff assures me that a handful of it can kill a horse.

I think I shall leave the commentary there!

Wave

Yes I know, I nearly missed this day!    The holidays are in full swing you see, and rain is coming, but the wide overhangs  and bendy buildings which are reminiscent of waves will keep me dry until tomorrow!

Hello!

The tip of a Norfolk Pine seems to be asserting itself among the steel and glass.   It reminded me a little of a weed in a pavement crack.   Why doesn't it have a fairy on the top of it I wonder?

Cheers,

Separated by a common language

I amuse myself often by contemplating the strange ways of the English language, in this case by contemplating how uncomfortable it would be to wear thongs like these if one was unaware of the footwear connotation of the word.

But it must be said that there's nothing more comfy than wandering around town in summer in a pair of rubber thongs.

Hats on please!

The weahter is a little sultry at the moment, warm with grey sky, but the UV index is still hovering around an extreme 14 on the scale, so it would pay to wear a hat if you are outside!

Enjoy

This is Australia, we don't particularly like the "Happy Holiday" greeting promulgated by our friends in the northern hemisphere.

So let's make up our own nondescript half baked apology for having a holiday then shall we?

Scene but not herd!

Was it the copywriter, the sign writer or the office junior?

If it's a joke, will someone please explain?

More Christmas Lights

Santa on a Surfboard, the tree all trimmed and ready, and a few quiet drinks in the balmy evening.

Christmas, with or without the fattened goose, is coming.

Christmas Lights

Actually there aren't any Christmas lights in the photo, but there could be.  It's just another night at Norfolks, Moffat Beach.

Afterglow
3 of 3

Just as I start to think I could sit here for ever, the tide starts to encroach on my territory, and it starts to become too dark to play anymore.

There's always tomorrow!

Afterglow
1 of 3

After sunset, but still with enough light to see, there's a sort of luminous quality about the sky.

The colours are just magically washing away until tomorrow, soon they will be gone.

This morning I caught......

The sun is already well below the horizon, but no one is in a hurry to go home.

Sadly twilight only lasts a few minutes, but they are all making the most of the day.

Moffat Pier

This playground sits in the deep shade of the giant fig so it's a bit of a challenge to photograph on a sunny day, and besides it's barely visible then under the tide of children, so here it is quite late in the evening thanks to the miracle of the modern camera.

Brain Fade!

I took this photo and have now completely forgotten the name of the tree bearing these flowers!

Any help will be appreciated (and acknowledged!)

Thanks Elaine, I'd barely posted when I received your advice!

I am always surprised at just how fast parachutes are travelling when their occupants come in to land.  I'm also often surprised at the boardshorts and sandals that are worn, when I expect some sort of flying suit and boots!
