Waste

One of the fundamentals of good street furniture design is that an object's function should be immediately recognisable without the need for big red signs on the side!

Hmmm.... I wonder what that black box with the curved roof and silver trim is for.

Queen of the Colonies

The "Queen of the Colonies" monument on Moffat Headland takes the form of a Pandanus tree and roots with the name of the ship carved on it.  While the tree has long gone, the concrete replica remains.  The plaque reads as follows:-

On the 8th April 1882 the ship Queen of the Colonies sailed into Moreton Bay.  A woman passenger had died and it was decided to take the body to Cape Moreton for burial.
While returning, a storm arose, the ship was lost to sight and the small boat was driven onto rocks below this spot.
The survivors were marooned for fourteen days living on shell fish and berries until rescued by a search party from Brisbane.
One of the sailors carved the name "Queen of the Colonies" on the pandanus tree. This led to their rescue.
This plaque was presented by the descendants of Captain Robert Cairncross.

Pigface?

Horror!  I'm too lazy to look up the actual name of this plant, but anything succulent is called Pigface isn't it?

Perhaps this is Mini-Pigface.  I shall find out I suppose and make a note!

In the screen, waves turn into skis and then to body surfers before becoming fish.  Or is it just a random pattern?   But what is the bollard doing on the beach front a hundred kilometres from where a ship can stop?

The sea of a thousand rubbish bins

It's just a nostalgic indulgence this photograph of a thousand rubbish bins, but I have to do it every few years none the less.   The brick ones are full of concrete now, but they are still there.

We could do with a drop of rain though, to freshen up the lawns!

It's been a while since I've been to Mooloolaba with my camera, so a simple shot of Point Cartwright over what my grandson calls "The Rock Beach" will remind us of what it is like.

Bolt Shop Sculpture

I was buying some bolts and this gorgeous pallet was lying against the wall.

I wanted to take it home, but wasn't sure if the other of us would enjoy it quite as much if it were sitting in our living room.

Texture

If you had told someone to paint your meter box so that it would fade in a  sort of stripe and show the marks where you'd started each brush stroke, perhaps to evoke a feeling of racing yachts on a windy day, could they have done it?

My fear is that not everyone sees this as art, and it will soon be painted over once again.

Heritage

This little dragon was once a water play device, then after years of drought it became a play structure.  It was brightly coloured and has featured on this very blog several times in the past.

Now it is cream and is a heritage play area.   I'm not sure what that means, but I do know that I like it now while at the same time being not quite to terms with the loss of colour.

Pastel

I could fairly be accused of being ungrateful if I were to complain about an over abundance of clear blue skies and sharp shadows, so I will just happily say that I really quite like the days when the skies are a little grey and the colours muted.

Dingly Dangly Things

A bunch of singly dangly toys hang humiliatingly exposed to the whim of anyone with a camera, and they don't all look happy about it do they?

I kept this shot because of the weird lighting, dark brick paving over-exposed to the extent that it would pop the eyes of a hippopotamus.

Coastal Pathway

Cut out signs like this are a nightmare to photograph because the background often makes the letters unreadable.   That is why there is no pathway in view, but rest assured it exists and it follows the coast for its full length (give or take) and really we should all use it daily!

 One day I shall take my camera and travel the fifty kilometres or so taking photographs just like this, every few hundred metres.

Rubbish!

I took this photograph after the last weekend in January and it's taken me until now to calm down.   I give the nice people credit for having gathered all their rubbish and put it in their broken inflatable pool, but how does that help anyone really, leaving the job half done?

Someone has to pick it up by hand and dispose of it.  If it fitted in the car to get them to the beach then it would fit in the car to take it home again!

If I knew where they lived I'd happily return the favour with a tidily constructed pile of debris in their back yard!

Spring Tides

Technically I don't think the "King" tides are "spring" ones,  but some will remember the tree on the headland and the misty early morning photos of early last month as we walked across the sand.

Big summer tides and sloppy conditions make short work of the beach, but it will be back.

Moffateers, the memorial

At the top of Moffat Headland is this simple sculpture, a bronze towel on an etched block of sandstone.  On the towel are the words "Moffateers" and "Plus" - the plus being a reference to the badges worn by those who had ridden waves at Moffs greater than a particular height.

I've never seen a "Plus 12", but they do exist.

Tree Fern

The giant tree fern is endemic to this region, and this specimen has a trunk at least two metres tall.  Unfortunately there are lots of other similar species and I don't have a clue if this is actually one of the local variety or an interloper.   It's nice though.

In Paris, there is a place where the finest hot chocolates are served in the ambience born of being in the one place for more than a century.

Creamy

Some mornings I just sit and watch the waves come to a gentle stop in the shallows.  For reasons that haven't been explained to me, on days like this it is as though the water has been thickened to a rich creamy consistency, and everything seems to move in slow motion.

That tree again

This Pandanus is going to get a prize for being the most photographed tree in this blog.  It deserves it too.

A few weeks ago, it was the one with the beach towel in it, but it was in the middle of the day then, after the pink had gone from the day.

Home Sweet Home

Arriving home after watching the sunrise, I thought I show a little of where I live.

It's true that we don't have a roof or electricity at the moment, and life is a little like living in a tent with a solid floor, and I tend to work from about this time of the morning until the equivalent in the afternoon.   My little respite is that walk each day to the sand!

Antiques

"Antique: a collectible object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its considerable age."

Since most things in antique shops in Australia are not as old as I am, I am not prepared to admit that the age of any of them is anywhere near "considerable".

I suspect therefore, that the collectible objects within, have a high value for other reasons.

The shopfront is real, as is the awning, but I'd be curious to know how close to original the lettering style and the lovely leaf motif is.   I suspect that our perception may be different from the historic reality, but I'd love to see an early photo to prove me wrong.

Steve's Boards

Published simply because I like the photo.

The late Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter", was a keen surfer who from the time he was jus the kid from the reptile place on the highway,  could be found most mornings on a wave somewhere on the Sunshine Coast.  He went on to turn his parent's reptile park into a world famous zoo and himself into a warrior of sorts for conservation, but whenever  he was home he'd still be found out on the waves, and not always wearing his boots and safari suits.

Some of his boards were/are on display in the "Surfing through the Decades" exhibition in Caloundra which closes tomorrow.

Moffateers

A badge of honour - this board has been ridden on waves higher than six feet at Moffat Headland, and in the days when six feet was taller than most men!

I don't think I've ever seen an "12 plus" badge, but they did exist in the good old days.

Down Memory Lane

A super collection of old surfboards "Surfing down the decades"  is currently being exhibited at the Caloundra Performing Arts Centre.

Admission is a gold coin donation to Surfers with Disabilities, and you have three more days to get down there.  For those in the northern hemisphere... just be content to look at this photograph and be assured it was a nostalgic old ride for some of us!

Entry - Moffat Beach Post Office

Unlike some countries in which I happen to live, dogs and bicycles are not necessarily welcome inside trading houses here.  The nice folk at the Moffat Beach Post Office make provision for that, and there's even somewhere to charge your electric bike, (or dog if you don't have a real one) or perhaps have a shave.

Actually I've been parking my grand dog at this very spot for several years and hadn't noticed the power outlet until reviewing this photo, but I'm sure I'll find a use for it in future!
