Pool Fencing

To say our pool fencing laws are extreme is to understate the situation.   This fence is not to prevent children falling into the ocean, it is acutally to stop them climbing from the beach into the (free) pool area, where they would surely drown if they did not enter via the gate.

The ocean is not considered dangerous, nor are rivers, nor ponds, but swimming pools are public enemy number ...... something!

Gaudi-esque

There's the slightest hint of Barcelona in the beach side seating, but I don't think Señor Gaudi had any stainless steel grinding rails to stop damage by skateboards in his benches!

Ordinary

Even on a day when the wind is howling from the south, the clouds are building to give us even more rain, the beach is strewn with flotsam and the ocean is nothing but a foamy slop, even then, King's Beach isn't a terrible place to be.

I'm not sure if waiting in a quite severe current to be pummelled by messy waves that are unridable is my idea of fun any more.

Jack 'er up a bit for a better view!

In Queensland we have something of a tradition of building in light weight materials, and it is quite easy to "jack up" a house and build in underneath to double the living space.

Taking it up five storeys is probably a bit extreme!

At Bulcock beach, the water flows swiftly, and it does drop away rather sharply to boot.   I suspect that this couple were sitting down, but where are their legs?

More Shade

Not really there to shade the building, but the trellis does a great job of hiding some careless geometry in the window spacings behind.

I like the moving patterns that we get in a country with such deep shadows.

Shade

I keep trying to photograph the trees in Bulcock Street, with little success.   The figs cast heavy shade over the street and to my mind look simply fantastic, but there is a push to rid the town of the nasty evil things.

Something to do with their roots not being quite what they should be, enabling them to tumble over occasionally.

Sadly.

Erection

Last month or late in March to be precise, the Mooloolaba Triathlon was held.   Due to the miracle of modern time travel I am writing this two days before the event, it has rained all day and all night, and most of the arterial roads on the Coast have suffered at least minor flooding.

For that reason, I don't know yet whether I was able to cover the event!  

When I saw this building, which I imagine will be the temporary judges stand for the swim leg, I couldn't help but wish I could turn it into a house!

I love a garden bed full of gazanias, the plant that is much favoured by council for street planting, but isn't strictly speaking desirable for many reasons,

Did someone say bin?

I've posted a similar view before, but in recent times, the civic fathers must have tired of emptying the bins along this walkway (fourteen in this shot by my count) so instead of demolishing or removing them, they filled the brick ones with concrete and installed a couple of new ones for good measure.

Turkey!

Scrub turkeys are large, almost flightless birds with an ugly buzzard head and a propensity for digging great holes and building mounds in anything that isn't concrete.

I'm not sure if I 'get' the need to tag everything in site, actually I am sure and I don't, but if ever there was a place where it was an acceptable practice it would be a skate park.

It seems such a shame that the paint was necessary in the first place, but also that it wasn't applied to one of council's unloved community buildings!

Maintenance

Take a nice modern building, don't paint it for a decade or so, then simply bung on a couple of unpainted PVC downpipes.  Nice!

I wonder how this building would look if the gang that gets paid to paint out the graffiti on the skate parks were paid to clean the gallery?

Wet Day Food

On a cool wet day, there's nothing like a luke warm pie or a wrinkled sausage roll to warm the cockles of one's heart, perhaps washed down with a cold fizzy drink.

I left the odd colour balance, because the actual colour is a truly awful beige, much more accurately reflecting the value of the food!

Mt Coolum Waterfall

Some may have heard, it's been wet round here of late.

So wet that occasionally that Mt Coolum, which is just a big rock really, springs a waterfall.   I'm not sure how that happens, but it does.

Cobbles

Today's city daily photo theme is cobbles, which makes it hard because we don't have any, but we do have these imitation things stamped in concrete and painted bright red to give a bit of life to the paving at King's Beach.

I sort of like them, specially when the cracks fill with the fine sand from the beach.
