Seven Days of Wood1 - The Post

By the beach, timber ages to a beautiful grey if you let it.  Although I've done no one a favour with the reduced size of the photographs, if your eyes are good enough you'll see a small procession of ants in profile as they march to the top of the post, which itself is sun bleached to a colour which is complimentary to the sky.

Empty

I am not sure whether a shoe without a person in it is more correctly described as "vacant" rather than empty, but I saw the poor thing lying lonely on the beach and thought a photograph might cheer it up.

Yes it was on a small patch of sand between the Southern Breakwater and the Rocks.

Glass

A sunbather reflects under the watchful eye of the Surf Rescue Patrol.

Did I need to mention the sunbathers sunglasses, the lifeguard's glass binoculars or the glass in the window itself?

I didn't think so.

Mooloolaba

Paths and Passages

The path along the Esplanade runs for several kilometres between the Mouths of the Mooloola and Maroochy Rivers. During daylight hours there is continuous throng of walkers, joggers, cyclists, dogs and baby carriages snaking along the waterfront.

Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

May 2009 bring you whatever you seek, and with a little luck, another 365 pictures from the Sunshine Coast.

As I was flicking through the photos posted here to date, I was quite surprised to see the large number of shots featuring water.

This shouldn't have been too much of a surprise I suppose, given that our entire city is built along the water's edge, but I have certainly not consciously set out to depict that. In another year, I'll be interested to look back at what sort of a picture it is that I've painted of our town.

I found it impossible to choose my best picture of 2008, but I know a few people were taken by my young fisherman, and if I look hard enough I can see quite a lot of new year symbolism in it; from the sun setting on the old year, to the boundless optimism of youth - I'm sure we'll have a great time in 2009.

All my life's a circle!

Not quite a circle nor a perfect sphere, but an entirely unnecessary reminder that the Christmas Season is almost upon us.

This photo wasn't taken on the Sunshine Coast, but at Joan's place in the Blue Mountains, where two years ago we spent our first Christmas away from our (adult) children.

While in reality it's just a fancy glass light globe, it's special because of where it was and where we were when I took the photo, for us it's a very personal reminder of the true value of a long and lasting friendship, to say nothing of a fantastic couple of weeks!

Over the coming three weeks, I will attempt to convey some of the flavour of the Christmas Season in Australia. I'm not sure that will be an easy task, but time will tell.

Lines

Lines of waves, but I'm afraid this pic is a bit of a "theme cheat" as the "lines" of waves are actually called "sets".

This is the day after, leftover from storm surf adjacent to the Northern Breakwater of the Mooloolah River. It's a bit hard to judge the scale of these waves, but they were easily three metres at times. The person standing by the white marker light gives a bit of an idea.

Sister City Sculpture

Today's monthly theme is "Sister City", but with our town in some disarray after the recent merge of local authorities, rather than a picture of our Sister City, to best explain the sculpture, I'll quote directly from journalist Sam Benger published in the Sunshine Coast Daily Newspaper on the 12th June.

"It's a bird, it’s a plane ... it’s a flying bronze sculpture.

A swan song to the Maroochy Shire was unveiled at Nelson Park at Alexandra Headland yesterday – a $130,000 bronze sculpture representing the area’s emblem, the black swan, ready to take flight next to an egret, the emblem of Maroochy’s sister city in China, Xiamen.

After three years of planning and controversy surrounding the cost of the project, the final product, weighing a massive 1.5 tonnes, was lifted into place by a crane yesterday.

Local Kenilworth artists Elli Schlunke and Tony Reay had a hand in the creation of the sculpture, which was constructed by Chinese artist Min Yi Ming.

“The idea of it was to use both cities’ emblems as a way of connecting the two, and for that reason we’ve called it 'sisters by choice',” Elli said.

“In some ways it has lost a bit of its significance now that the three councils have merged, but it’s also a record of part of that history of the area and of an era that has just finished.”

Former Maroochy Shire Mayor Joe Natoli, who championed the project after a similar sculpture was unveiled in Xiamen last year, defended the cost of the artwork and said at the time the statue was cheaper than the one in China and would be an outstanding piece of artwork for the Coast.

Tony said originally the statue was to go in the water, but due to its size – the swan has a wingspan of 6.3m while the egret stands 3.4m high – it was decided the statue would take pride of place on a small island situated in the centre of the park.

Chinese artist Min Yi Ming said it took almost a year to create the sculpture, which was constructed by placing bronze sheets over a steel frame and belting them into shape."

It is there somewhere! This one is probably worth the effort of clicking on the picture to see a bigger version.

See the sign that says "Alex Bar and Grille"? Well the convenience store is sort of to the left a bit and behind a car.

Perhaps I'm cheating by not showing it in all its glory, but really it's all a bit boring, our local shop, devoid of character, no cigarette advertisements (illegal here, as is displaying lots of them for sale), but the sunset gives it a bit of a lift don't you think?

77 The Esplanade Mooloolaba, is an office building on the beach surrounded by Norfolk Island Pines. Quite a pleasant location to work from if work one must!

When the architecture is uninspiring, it's time to try the "old mirror trick" for the camera!

Water

When you live on the coast and the theme is 'water', deciding how much water to include in a single photograph becomes problematic.

Storm surf at Alexandra Headland doesn't particularly make a beautiful scene, but for those that can get out, there is always the satisfaction of telling their Mum they rode a ten footer!

If they don't drown.
