Back to the Flats then

It's not just the caravan parks that enjoy strong occupancy, judging by the number of lights in the beachfront apartments, occupancy is pretty high in winter there too.

Back to the Caravan

During winter our caravan parks are full of southerners, here to enjoy our mild climate. This one looks to be a veteran of the seventies, judging by the style.

Time for Dinner

When it's a chilly twenty degrees (celcius) no one in their right mind is going to go out to dinner. Well not without the beanie on anyway.

Winter fishing

It's winter for crying out loud.

It must be less than 20° C and I'm walking on the beach with wooly socks, jeans and a light jacket on in deference to the season if not the temperature, but that doesn't mean it's right to be a tourist and pretend that there's warmth in that there sun. Not even if you're fishing!

Mind you, this photo was taken a month or so ago, and last week's temperatures have been in the balmy thirties and even thirty-seven yesterday... just like the height of summer!

Tinny

I've mentioned the tinny before, and this is what they do second best: sit out in the open with little or no need for maintenance between fishing trips.

Pelicans have a sqeaky clean image round here, not like the greedy seagulls, but it wouldn't be smart to stand between a pelican and his dinner!

They're coming back!

A few months ago we visited the vast seabird breeding colonies in central Australia. Slowly the birds are reappearing, wandering around casually and pretending that they never left.

The Last Bike Path Challenge

If you made it through yesterday, the last great challenge awaits. Now the trick is to go THROUGH the power pole, since clearly there's no room either side.

Happy Trails!

The Bike Path Challenge

Every now and then I get the impression that no one in Council's office ever rides on bikeways. Here is a lovely downhill bit, but the challenge is to duck under the street sign, while setting oneself to so that one's handlebars miss the big post, and one's wheels miss the embankment.

If there's someone coming the other way, you both die.

This means YOU!

Is putting more posts in a way of emphasising a point in the same way as using multiple question marks is ????

I like to ride my bike in and out between the posts in the hope that they'll just keep putting more in until I stop.

Fluffy lowers on the bike path too!

If one isn't riding too fast by the time one reaches the edge of the dark foresty bit, one can stop to smell the fluffy flowers, like this callistemon.

Bike path prettiness

If one looks around, even the rattiest of weed can look quite pretty if the sun hits it from the right direction. It's worth getting off the bike to take a picture I think.

Here's another piece of my commute.

The path isn't very wide, but it's a delightful interlude, and it happens just before the hilly bit.

I ride my bicycle to the office, there's a particular path that runs through a little patch of rainforest. Sometimes I stop for a bit, just to look up into the canopy.

Everything New is Old again!

Then someone says, "Our factory will look fantastic with a funky new entrance statement".

And it does.

Until they change the business name, and only blotch out the sign, then let it all fade to a uniform state of muck, before parking the bin across the doorway.

Paint me

I've been in meetings where the design manager enthusiastically waxes lyrical about the synergy of the blue and turquoise facade. The wiley old development manager waits for a break in the waxing, and declares sternly "but it'll fade so fast I'll have to paint it twice more before Christmas."

Sugar Road

Sugar Road is a busy little byway, with a mix of car sales yards, industrial buildings and showrooms that are desperately struggling to find an indentity.

This strip couldn't be mistaken even in the dark, but the weathering on the facade after a very short life, does not bode well for their presentation in future years.

Well I never claimed I could count!

The trouble with deciding on a number in a series is that there are just so many pictures that have to be left out. Dear me, I haven't even started on the Banksias.

Never mind, after this Calistemon we'll get back to something else for a time!

Five Fluffy Flowers
Five

The Wattle tree does of course provide Australia's floral emblem, but the wattle flower comes in many shades of yellow ranging from this beautiful cream, to a vivid yellow. The form also varies from these long strands, to simple pom poms, but one thing is true of them all: when a wattle tree is in flower, no one can mistake it for anything else.

Eucalypts have a great range of flowers, usually little fluffy things like this, but they are in the tops of the trees and are not visible to the casual passer-by. I was a bit lucky to find this on a small tree a few metres above the ground.

Five Fluffy Flowers
One

I was walking through our suburb the other day, basking in the glorious winter sunshine, when it occurred to me that we are blessed to have so many plants which flower all year round, or specially in winter. Then it seemed that so many of them had extended stamen or petals that it was worth a short photographic series.

This one is the Golden Penda, Xanthostemon Chrysanthus and they look fabulous when the trees are in full flower.

Night

I thought it might be fun to see the difference between night and day, so I returned the next evening to repeat the shot I used yesterday. This photograph was taken approximately two minutes after last light, all signs of the sunset had disappeared but there was just enough light to illuminate the clear winter sky and the sand below.
