Waiting for dinner

A much happier bird than yesterday's!

This little bloke is one of a family who fly in for a feed each night at our friend's place. For those who don't recognise him, he's a Kookaburra, the largest of the Kingfisher clan, famous for their distinctive laughing call.

One of the great sounds of the Australian bush.

Love these little birds so rare here we only find them in the zoo.

But they are not actually "little" birds: they are quite large and very strong.

You are right of course Julie, they aren't a small bird at all, but I live among waterfowl, (pelicans, cranes, waterhens) and so on, so I guess it's just a matter of scale!

That's a little more exotic than my garden birds. I am one envious photographer.

Now this makes me homesick for Australia and for my home in Cairns. I so loved the kookaburras and used to feed them, of course. A lovely shot.

I've been a bad blog friend lately but I've been looking at your photos when I can. I love this one of course. Right at this moment I can hear a baby kooka calling out for his dinner. The babies really do make the most unusual noise.

I took a photo of him the other day so I might post it on my blog - thanks for the idea!
