One of those days!

Have you ever had one of those days when even though you had a whole list of things to do, you couldn't get motivated?

That was today.  I tried sitting on the beach till the feeling passed, but it never did.

View from the Bank

The back streets of Mooloolaba have a sort of sub-tropical, comfortable feel, despite the wall of concrete between them and the water's edge.

Spring

Spring is a strange time in our part of the world.   It brings with it moderate temperatures (approaching thirty degrees C), usually little rain, cloudless skies, and a sort of listlessness that promises little.    Colours become muted, and lost in the afternoon haze, the sky annoyingly subdued.

Perhaps I am being annoyingly ungrateful!

Iceland

It's funny how when one travels one is constantly reminded of places near home.  Here though we are home and reminded of our travels.

This stranded jelly fish for instance, looks so much like a piece of glacier ice that for a moment we were taken back in time to another place!

Twilight

I've been trying to identify some of the things that perhaps we take for granted, or simply just don't notice when we live here.    One of them is twilight, or actually a complete lack of it.

The shadows grow long and soft across the beach, the sand changes colour from gold to brown, and then someone throws a switch somewhere and it gets dark.

Cure for jetlag
Dicky Beach

There is something quite soothing about dipping one's jetlagged toes in the rockpools near home, the sky impossibly clear and the water temperature warmer than the air temperature in the places we have just left.

No doubt about it, we're home for summer!

Stumers Creek

Where creek meets ocean, or doesn't as the case may be.

On a higher tide the two will be reunited.

Yesterday it was soft and pastel, today vibrant and sharp. Same place different direction.

Beach-scape.

I never cease to be amazed at how the same scene can vary so much, from deep shadows and rich blue skies, to subtle pastels with the hint of humidity.

I never ceased to be amazed at how beautiful it is and how privileged I am to be in a position to record just a small piece of it.

Stumers Creek

Stumers Creek is a bit like Coolum's version of Caloundra's Tooway, except a little more secluded.

Sometimes I get a little frustrated that this is a "City" blog with no city, no rich tapestry of human activity to document.   On days like this why would I care about seeing other people?

Mural

The Coolum Boardriders don't have a fancy plaque explaining the artistic intent of their mural.

Perhaps they think it's obvious.

Picnic Shelter

The crisp form of this shelter, with it's sloping posts to give the illusion of solidity in it's connection to the ground is actually quite a traditional one, if that is a term that can be applied to a few generations.   I'm not sure whose idea it was originally, but the sloping sides are a device that add something to the picture.

No it's not lens distortion!

Tonkas

So here I am, having a pleasant stroll in the sunshine, when I come across this sign.

What on earth does it mean?   Walk slowly and don't run over trucks?  There are no crossovers, no driveways, no access points and the path is too narrow for vehicles.

Perhaps it's a Tonka lane.

Pathway, Coolum

It runs beside the caravan park, where all those arty pieces are, and it's a very pleasant place I have to say.

Publish an awful photo and pretend it's art - day 2

I can't even explain why I didn't throw this away, except that most will know I am but two days away from returning to live blogging after my northern hemisphere stint, and I was clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel!

Publish an awful photo and pretend it's art day -1

If the photo doesn't quite work because the exposures are wrong and the background is too cluttered and you just missed the action bit, never fear, just convert it to black and white and pretend that's what you were trying to do.

Gateway with discarded chocolate sundae.

If this were a deliberate piece of art, I may well wax lyrical about the sundae evoking memories of distant holidays while at the same time reminding us of the fragility of life.

It's not, and the phrase on the package comes back to haunt me_
"Dispose of thoughtfully"

Someone has.

Illusory fence art.

Quite witty I think.

look ahead
John Fuller 2012
This work is inspired by coastal camping, pedestrian priority and the casual journey.
It's about walking, discovering the paths in Coolum and the short-cuts, which happens more when you are on holidays or relaxing.
Some people look up when they walk, some look down and, with this work, if you look ahead, you will see the potential for a new path that is a short-cut.
The fence has been reconstructed with a slight twist to create a 3D illusion of a shortcut to the beach. It is only obvious from one point so that if you are looking up or down as you walk, you may miss noticing the possibility.

Tangled Web

Sometimes the roots of the Pandanus are open and free, spindly structures.  Just why these seem to be deliberately competing with one another for a grip on the earth is a mystery to me.  But they are lovely things.

Circus trees

When I was small, I went to a circus where among other things, in one act three horses walked around with their forelegs resting on each other's backs.  There may have been some innuendo there that my eight year old mind didn't understand, but when I see these pandanus, I see those horses.

Actually they are more like giraffes.

Centipede giraffes at that.

The colours of construction.

Once upon a time, building sites were dirty places filled with tough men who scoffed at danger.

Now, even the pipes are colour co-ordinated.

The last bit of fence Art ... for now....

Another piece of art on the caravan park fence:

Coral Sea Motif
Blair McNamara 2012
I used the universal shape of the "fin" to tell some of my personal stories about Coolum.  The background (subterranean) boards reference the traditional place-name of Coolum having plenty of fresh water.
The planks also vary in dimension and colours like a territorial brand, to express Coolum's contemporary identity threatened by over population.  We all love our town.
The individual fin cut-ous represent a crowded surf and the Polynesian-styled panels below are our ancestors.  The smallest fin-ike shapes are the spark of grommets and our community potential.  Fins or "blanks" that sit within all of these shapes sympolise loss.
Every fin is somone I have surfed with in a now endangered Coral Sea.

One more small piece of fence

Coolum, Time and Texture
Carl Holder 2012
Although Coolum Beach is a changing place, its original and enduring natural qualities are constant and timeless.  This artwork celebrates those qualities through and indirect expression of their textures and forms in a fluid and tactile three-dimensional timber surface.
This artwork is designed to present an ever-changing, multi-layered aesthetic, which responds to changes in light, perspective and distance.  Shadows created by the three-dimensional forms change as the sun passes across the distance;  the interplay of light and dark appears to invoke the form of a wave rising and falling at the base of Mount Coolum.  When viewed in detail, the micro textures reference the minutiae of life at the beach - rock formations, ripples in the sand, and glistening reflections of water.

Excerpt

This is a detail from a wall piece which is about two metres high and at least eight long.  I apologise to the artist for not conveying the complete work, but I can pass on the complete description:-

Kalam - glangur ngarawiny
Bianca Beetson 2012
This work acknowledges the spirt of Kulum's (Coolum's) Kabi Kabi people and its Aboriginal history, whilst also reflecting its contemporary history.  The work references the way Mt Coolum embraces the ocean and the sky, whilst the pink reflects the majestic sunsets often seen over Mt Coolum.

Budget

Coolum marks the gateway to the Sunshine Coast for those travelling from Noosa.   There's no fanfare, no big sign shouting "Welcome", instead of the council splashing out on a fountain and laser light show, there's this.

Welcome on a budget.

Movement

I mucked around with a few thoughts for photographs for this month's theme day.   I tried people running, and blurry ambulances, but they all seemed a bit obvious.

So here once more is the boardwalk that takes us under the Tooway Creek bridge.   It snakes its way around the foreshore and under the bridge before rising again on the other side.

It doesn't move, but your eye will, as you trace the handrails to from the edge of the shot and back again!

Tooway Creek

This is just one of many interpretations of today's City Daily Photo theme "Movement" to see more please follow this link.
