Left Behind

"Santa Barbara" sits alone, immune from the highrise on either side, like some sort of development plum ripening for some future season.

Tooway Sunrise

I can't say I am terribly enthused about the time I have to get out of bed to photograph sunrise, but I have to admit that it's often worth it.

Seaside Texture

It's part of a sculpture piece in Duporth Avenue Maroochydore.

It does have a certain "beachiness" about it, which probably illustrates that things don't have to be blue-greay and white to impart that flavour.

The peril of being a roof at the beach.

I suppose one could argue that the rust is merely part of the rich urban fabric, the hard-won patina that comes with age.  But the reality is, it's just rust.  It's what happens when one leaves a metal roof out in the salt air for a couple of decades.

Fortunately it's the roof of the much maligned and not much patronised "Big Top" shopping centre at Maroochydore, and the owners have announced an update programme involving the expenditure of many tens of millions of dollars.

I expect that by this time next year, the patina will be no more, but neither will the leaks.

Seaside Patina 2

Not every electrician in days gone by was particular about protecting live wires.

Not every painter in current times is an expert in painting straight lines.

Don't Pinch Me

"Smile you are on camera - Don't pinch me"

"Pinch" in this case is imploring us not to steal the books on the footpath display.

The hard bits

There are two hard bits in this photograph:- the rocks around the edge of the water of course, and actually getting wet for the first time, after that it's all plain paddling.

More Road texture

Since we don't have the materials to hand to make stone cobbles or even bricks, we build bricks of concrete coloured to look like clay, and when we need to repair them, well we slap in some concrete and paint it to blend seamlessly with the rest.

No one will ever know.

Road Textures

We lack history, and cobble stones and interestingness in our paving materials, so we paint it green with yellow garden edges and hope people will think it's grass.

The Surf Club

Mooloolaba Surf Club is called simple "The" Surf Club.  Rest assured there are others!   It's actually a rather pleasant place to sit and watch the waves, while above, a collection of model lifesavers engage in a variety of club sporting disciplines.

Greenhouses

On Triathlon weekend there are even more lights than usual, and loud speakers.  To make that clear; LOUD speakers are tied to every pole.

It makes for a pleasant place to eat a pizza, even if it's far too noisy to discuss the greenhouse gases that may have been generated over the course of the event.

Mooloolaba Tri

March (yes, I've left it a bit late to post) is Mooloolaba triathlon month and the Friday night is Twilight run night.   Here, some of the 1,700 starters are waiting before the event.

Bollywood

Bollywood is a restaurant in Mooloolaba.   We haven't eaten there, but we will, and a full report will ensue.   If the food is as tacky-authentic as the decor and the service as friendly as the management, it promises to be a great experience.

Oh, and the dark vignetting on the photo is real, a happy accident caused by leaving the wrong lens hood on while shooting wide!

The One That Got Away

My almost three year old granddaughter was with me when this balloon escaped, so we hunted it down across the dunes and in return were allowed to keep it.

So now even stray balloons are following us home.

Party Time

It was party time apparently, but we couldn't help but feel sorry for her.  As soon as the balloons were installed within the picnic shelter, they began to destroy themselves in rapid succession.

We do hope the sound of gunfire abated before the speeches!

Graduation Day

The University of the Sunshine Coast is at the hub of probably the fastest growing industries in the region - education.

Like most modern universities it espouses creativity and freedom of though, encouraging the stretching of intellectual boundaries, all the while clinging to centuries old traditions of dress and ceremony in it's formal occasions.

There's a dichotomy there which makes me curious.

Junk Mail

The "Catalogue Industry" goes to great pains to tell us what a positive contribution to society it's members make.

While as an industry they do take some effort to ensure that mail is not delivered to addresses that do not want it, here is a reason it's called "junk" mail.

The Beauty of Decay

This month's City Daily Photo theme is "the beauty of decay".   I suspect I could have sought a pile of leaf mulch or perhaps some garden compost somewhere, but time and time again I have made comment on the newness of the environment in which I live.

The Sunshine Coast is a city desperately seeking patina, if there is decay it is new and unkempt and far from beautiful.

So I have sought out my first computer, sitting under the lathe in my shed as a symbol.  It sits there, a quarter of a century after it was at the peak of technology, wanting to decay, but it can't.

It just gathers dust.

It was once a beautiful object at the cutting edge of industrial design.  Is it still?

For more photographs on this theme, please remember to visit the City Daily Photo Theme Day pages.
