Surf

What better way to leave the month than by the same path that we entered it.

It hadn't occurred to me how out of control this bloke appears to be, yet how under control he really is.  In a second from now he will be spearing off in the opposite direction, unaware of his precarious state at this instant.

Sleep out.

These little enclosed verandahs were called "sleep outs" in the days before air conditioning.  On a hot evening, one could move one's bedding out to the cool of the verandah and sleep "out" there.

In other places they were called "sleeping verandahs", but these days one would have trouble finding a spot for the fifty inch LCD screen.

Climate Control as it once was done.

In this age of sliding aluminium glazing, we forget that casement windows were designed so that they could be opened to catch the breeze.

If the prevailing breeze was from the opposite direction on another day, one would simply open the opposite handed panes.

Graphics

I just wish the sign here would be somehow cast in lava to keep it for all time.

As a piece of graphic it has absolutely no redeeming features, which I suspect makes it all the more important as a piece of history.

How cool would it have been if the "L" had been shared, with the words being overlaid in the manner of a scrabble game?

Disappearing

From a time when the service bay was called a "Lubritorium" and cheery assistants dispensed petroleum products and cleaned windscreens, one senses that the Kenilworth garage is on the brink of being lost.

Therefore it is recorded for posterity.

I have heard it said that girls like things that glitter, but boys are attracted to shiny things too apparently.

Specially if they are noisy shiny things.

Cushions

A gratuitous decor shot at the market stall selling cushions.

I must admit as I walked by, I wondered how many of them the proprietor's husband has to remove from the bed as he retires each evening.   I can only imagine the stress  that would be caused by being married to someone who actually owned a cushion shop!

Birdhouses

The Eumundi birdhouse bloke does a nice little line of crooked little houses.  I can imagine bird real estate agent advertisements pronouncing them as "opportunities" for little handyman birdies to fix up.

One born every minute

Recipe for success -

1)  make some vaguely oriental looking objects out of stuff that looks like stone, and put patterns on them that look even more vaguely like some sort of Asian script,

2) tell the punters they will "change your life" or at least enhance it.

3) make "Master Card welcome here"sign.

I wonder if the bigger ones are better for me than the smaller ones, or if I bought two smaller ones would that compensate?

They're back!

Suddenly as if to avoid extinction in the nick of time, hula hoops are breeding again.

If ever there was evidence of a threatened ecology caused by climate change, this is it.

Be afraid.

Things you can do with Banksia Pods.

You can turn 'em into pots that pong.   Just fiddle on the lathe for a bit and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for that authentic Aussie undie drawer fragrance.

I actually love the finished product, wish I had a use for them.   They'd make great door knobs if they were just a little more robust.

Buckets, no lids.

If anyone wants a white plastic bucket, I can probably point them towards a deal.

Obviously the busloads of tourists visiting the cheese factory have been letting the side down of late in the bucket purchasing stakes.

Marks where they've been.

At the Cheese factory, the boardwalk is etched with the imprints where non-slip mats have been cleaned.

This interesting snippet has been brought to you by someone devoid of inspiration for a photograph today.

Valves.

These valves on a wall at the Kenilworth Cheese factory have a redundant look about them.   I wonder what would come out of them if one turned them.

Ideally there would be gallons of some sort of cheesy stuff accompanied by a satisfying "splook" sound, but I suspect the only sound would be a dry "clank".

The old dairy.

It may actually not be a dairy, and I couldn't walk across to get a good look because it's in what I think are the showgrounds in Kenilworth, protected by a tall chain wire fence.

None the less, a cloud swept across the foreground just as I was walking past so I thought I'd take a photo.

The road from Conondale

Unless I am wrong, this will be the third time I have posted a similar view of this, the main street of Kenilworth over the years.   It's actually what you see as you arrive from Conondale.

As the trees start to form a canopy, I can imagine what the street will look like in a few more years.

I'll be back.

The Buildings (?) of Conondale 6 of 6

A road is not necessarily a building I suspect, never the less, at the edge of Conondale the road sweeps out towards Kenilworth with a gentle flourish.

I can confirm that the drive does not become less interesting as one cruises along.

The Rural Fire Brigade building seems ready to tackle any problem thrown at it.   It's a classic example of how form following function does not always produce a harmonious result.

Simple, without the need for extraneous detail.

I am sure that there are people who can tell a lot about a town by the size of its telephone exchange.  I suspect that this is overkill at Conondale, with plenty of room for expansion lurking within those four walls.

I am not sure what the current jargon for those communities within our Council area which were once towns but are now some sort of remote suburb.  Perhaps "community" says it all.

Conondale must be close to the smallest centre in the City, but it does have a school and a sign of the type that went out of fashion sometime last century, but which is now rare enough to be viewed as novel.

Carpark

In the old days we used to call these bits of left over space S.L.O.A.P or Space Left Over After Planning.   In this case its the vaguely triangular space that is left when one jams a circular car park ramp against a square building.

In this case it's a rather fetching effect, with enough light and green stuff to make driving up the ramp almost pleasant, despite the typical carpark darkness.

Gone Fishing

I was watching this cormorant in the surf for some time, hoping to get a photo of it as it surfaced.   When it did I fired three shots in quick succession, unable to see what was in the viewfinder.

Let's just say he's better at fishing than I am!

If you are thinking of doing a dastardly deed....

I'm not sure how most nasty people dispose of their doings, but the Butcher at Woombye will cut up a "private body" for you (ignoring that apostrophe for a bit, or perhaps the body of the signwriter was the first to be cut up!).

On the other hand, if you have a pig that's doing poorly, if you bring it here it will be cured in private.

Upside Down

This photograph is vaguely concerning.  I am not sure what actually happened to the person attached to those feet, but I get the distinct impression that he is buried waste deep in sand, head first.

This is just one of many photos today published on the theme Upside Down.  To see the City Daily Photo Community take on this theme please visit the Theme Day Gallery.
