One of those days!

Have you ever had one of those days when even though you had a whole list of things to do, you couldn't get motivated?

That was today. I tried sitting on the beach till the feeling passed, but it never did.

The back streets of Mooloolaba have a sort of sub-tropical, comfortable feel, despite the wall of concrete between them and the water's edge.

Spring

Spring is a strange time in our part of the world. It brings with it moderate temperatures (approaching thirty degrees C), usually little rain, cloudless skies, and a sort of listlessness that promises little. Colours become muted, and lost in the afternoon haze, the sky annoyingly subdued.

Perhaps I am being annoyingly ungrateful!

Iceland

It's funny how when one travels one is constantly reminded of places near home. Here though we are home and reminded of our travels.

This stranded jelly fish for instance, looks so much like a piece of glacier ice that for a moment we were taken back in time to another place!

Twilight

I've been trying to identify some of the things that perhaps we take for granted, or simply just don't notice when we live here. One of them is twilight, or actually a complete lack of it.

The shadows grow long and soft across the beach, the sand changes colour from gold to brown, and then someone throws a switch somewhere and it gets dark.

There is something quite soothing about dipping one's jetlagged toes in the rockpools near home, the sky impossibly clear and the water temperature warmer than the air temperature in the places we have just left.

No doubt about it, we're home for summer!

Beach-scape.

I never cease to be amazed at how the same scene can vary so much, from deep shadows and rich blue skies, to subtle pastels with the hint of humidity.

I never ceased to be amazed at how beautiful it is and how privileged I am to be in a position to record just a small piece of it.

Stumers Creek

Stumers Creek is a bit like Coolum's version of Caloundra's Tooway, except a little more secluded.

Sometimes I get a little frustrated that this is a "City" blog with no city, no rich tapestry of human activity to document. On days like this why would I care about seeing other people?

The Coolum Boardriders don't have a fancy plaque explaining the artistic intent of their mural.

Picnic Shelter

The crisp form of this shelter, with it's sloping posts to give the illusion of solidity in it's connection to the ground is actually quite a traditional one, if that is a term that can be applied to a few generations. I'm not sure whose idea it was originally, but the sloping sides are a device that add something to the picture.

No it's not lens distortion!

Tonkas

So here I am, having a pleasant stroll in the sunshine, when I come across this sign.

What on earth does it mean? Walk slowly and don't run over trucks? There are no crossovers, no driveways, no access points and the path is too narrow for vehicles.

Perhaps it's a Tonka lane.

I can't even explain why I didn't throw this away, except that most will know I am but two days away from returning to live blogging after my northern hemisphere stint, and I was clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel!

If the photo doesn't quite work because the exposures are wrong and the background is too cluttered and you just missed the action bit, never fear, just convert it to black and white and pretend that's what you were trying to do.

Gateway with discarded chocolate sundae.

If this were a deliberate piece of art, I may well wax lyrical about the sundae evoking memories of distant holidays while at the same time reminding us of the fragility of life.

It's not, and the phrase on the package comes back to haunt me_
"Dispose of thoughtfully"

This work is inspired by coastal camping, pedestrian priority and the casual journey.
It's about walking, discovering the paths in Coolum and the short-cuts, which happens more when you are on holidays or relaxing.

Some people look up when they walk, some look down and, with this work, if you look ahead, you will see the potential for a new path that is a short-cut.

The fence has been reconstructed with a slight twist to create a 3D illusion of a shortcut to the beach. It is only obvious from one point so that if you are looking up or down as you walk, you may miss noticing the possibility.

Tangled Web

Sometimes the roots of the Pandanus are open and free, spindly structures. Just why these seem to be deliberately competing with one another for a grip on the earth is a mystery to me. But they are lovely things.
