Mercury

I confess I thought I'd stumbled across a bit of ancient signwriting, a relic of a company long gone.

Then I discovered the Mercury Mufflers factory a few hundred metres up the road in the old Buderim Ginger factory!

Oh for the days when signs stood up to the weather for a century or more.

The number plate is a give-away. "Mod" could be short for "Model", but I just know, looking at the width of the tyres, and the new fuel tank and the exhaust pipe, that really it stands for "Modified".

I'd be happy to have it in my garage though.

On a clear day, you can see further than this

This photograph does smack of "but it was better than this in real life", but I wanted to show one more time just how little development exists in our city really. It's a very narrow strip with a few minor incursions beyond the security of the ocean's grasp.

A Test

A small snippet of a small but lovely shiny thing in a park in Buderim. I have no more detail. Can someone fill in the gap in information?

Green curves

This "busy-ness" design thing is not all that easy to pull off successfully. Sometimes the result looks as though it's just a bunch of elements pulled from a hat and stuck together.

I had this theory about the "whitening" of the coast moving towards a new vernacular, which obviously is not shared by the folk at Mal Pratt developments!

The Kon Tiki buildings in Maroochydore are brand new and have some quite nice things going for them.

The bleeding tiki centrepiece dripping green bile is not my favourite thing in the world though.

Yawning over awnings

No yawning really, just a bit of solid shade in the form of a super-hero lightning crack!

My favourite kind of shadow.

I've actually got lots of favourite kinds of shadow, but as pretty much everyone knows, when the patterned glass meets the sun, and the sun meets the structure below it, nice things can result.

The view opposite

The view from the houses in yesterday's photo, of the trees bracing themselves against attack. Perhaps it's a nature reserve.

I wonder if, just as the occupants of the houses look out and marvel at the trees opposite, the trees look out at the houses and ponder their fate.

Maroochy Boardwalk

A boardwalk is a boardwalk is a boardwalk. This one, a few hundred metres from, or close enough perhaps to be called part of the new Maroochy Town Centre.

It doesn't strike me as being an unpleasant place to live.

Night Beach

Yes it is inviting, but please don't swim here after dark. The sharks might find you appetising, and if you were to get into trouble, no one else could find you at all.

They are no less greedy under floodlight, as they wait for a morsel from the crowd.

Of course we could sit at a table under the shelter, and old habits die hard, but really we won't get too badly damaged sitting under the rays of the overhead halogen or are they tungsten lights?

One of our favourite things is to sit in the early evening with a warm Pizza on the wall above the floodlit beach, basking in the glow while congratulating ourselves on how lucky we are to be alive right now.

After Sunset

Notice how I've cleverly oh so slightly underexposed this shot for that "after sunset" look? Actually by the time I'd found that I'd posted this version of the view from the Loo with a View, it was too late to change it!

Civic Pride.

I don't understand why a town like Maleny allows it's rubbish bins to be littered with outdated concert posters, or for that matter current ones together with lots of marks where they've been.

Every bin in town has flyers and posters for events that have been (never ones that are to come strangely enough) ranging from car boot sales to concerts. To be fair to this one, it was barely a month after the event when I took this photo.

See how the previous effort had thoughtfully used blue tack to avoid damaging the paint? What a pity they didn't take the rotten stuff with them as well!

Now ain't that nice.

I've worked in offices that produced buildings like this, so I know the enormous sense of fulfilment one gets from satisfying a client's brief. I also know the enormous despondency of going past the rotten things for fifty years waiting for them to be bowled over, but they never are. Heaven forbid, in time they may even be deemed to be of historical significance and preserved in perpetuity.

The telephone exchange was once an "exchange" where operators connected callers to callees. As automation came along, equipment continued to diminish in size in a never ending spiral sadly destined to ensure that the growth of the system can be contained within the old building forever.

We can't even burn the things down.

How does one milk an almond?

It doesn't matter, because this photo is a curiosity. Did you know that if you tape a sign in your shop window that says "Almond Milk Now Available" just in front of your polished stainless steel coffee machine, at precisely the time of day when sufficient light is shining through the sign for the reflection to pick up the words, that the reflection will mimic the sign and not be reversed?

It's logical of course, but it plays with one's brain for a bit in real life.

The bright new signs are showing signs of fading even after the first year, so I thought I'd help them on their way a bit. That's much better, perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps in a year or ten the town will have softened back to its old self!

Concerns

I have expressed my concerns before at the loss of the traditional street facades in Maleny. They have almost entirely given way now to the bright modern clutter that some how works to hide the identity of the place. This is not to say they are bad, they have a certain consistency, but they are not the outcome loudly espoused by those who espoused outcomes in days gone by.

One has to arrive before the cafe opens if one wants to gain a proper appreciation of the seating arrangements.

Guests at the home of the writer may be surprised to find some little stools baring a striking but entirely co-incidental resemblance to these scattered about in the not too distant future.

The Tinker is a very cool "travelling events" van, lovingly restored by it's owners to period-perfect (or perhaps perfect in our imagination) standard.

It's for hire for functions and special events, and it's my contribution to today's theme "Let's Eat".

Stormwater Drain

I remember a time when stormwater drains were great concrete things filled with other people's chip wrappers and soft drink bottles. This is so much nicer, even if the bark keeps floating off down the river!

Opal World has been under "Old" management for forty years according to the sign on the door, so the demand for ugg boots and moccasins obviously continues unabated. Perhaps it's the 100,000km or three month guarantee.

I'm Fan of this Ceiling not a Ceiling Fan

The last time I posted details of these ceiling panels fanning across the roof of the picnic shelter at Coolum, they were relatively new.

I was a little shocked I must admit to see rust creeping into all the screws, and in the stainless steel roof sheeting itself. Around here, never say forever!

Parroting myself

I am sure a photo very similar to this one has appeared on this blog some time in the past nine years. The town of Maleny was once adorned with rude (in the rustic sense) wooden sculptures of birds and animals, left in their natural timber state. This one copped the full paint treatment and is none the worse for it. There are others around, I should revisit them too I suspect.

Ripple iron with Strelitzia

Perhaps one could be forgiven for thinking I took hours to set up this shot. Rest assured, I don't have that in me. I do love "ripple iron", that small profile version of the corrugated stuff that pops up from time to time in walls and window hoods. I specially like it when it's been patched and painted green.

Curious Snail

"The Curious Snail" was a term of affection perhaps for our state newspaper, the "Courier Mail" in the days when one had affection for newspapers. I'm a bit bemused by the banner proudly proclaiming the "Sydney Morning Herald" is sold at the Maleny Newsagency though, there must be more migrants from south of the border than I thought.

Fern

It's a version of what's called 'fishbone' fern, a pretty one that one often finds in old fernhouses (or just in older house gardens) it probably came from some exotic place originally, via England where it was exported with a load of Parlour Palms in the days when one had a parlour.

There again, it could just be a mutant form of the Australian native one, and the romance of tales of it's travels will be lost, replaced by another kind of excitement I guess.

Well that makes sense.

Here we have a new estate the size of a small country, yet with apparently room for just a basketball half-court. On the other hand, with 200 kilometres of dedicated bikeways to be built, I suppose I can see the need to take up valuable playground space with a bike track.

Fundamentally Flawed.

Note to file: it's fine to use planning buzzwords when you are trying to impress planners, but if the punters don't know what a "veloway" is, perhaps an explanation is necessary on the advertising sign.

Note to whoever thinks that note makes sense: Wouldn't it just be smarter to call them "bikeways" and end the confusion?

Yellow.

Those bits of yellow? They're an effort to appease some bloke who sits in an office and comes up with good ideas to make building just little more expensive.

Sometimes they work, they are temporary downpipes, in place until the real ones get here. If they aren't connected to anything at the bottom though, well perhaps they serve no purpose other than to add to the colour of the suburb.

Going....

It's a huge development, and there are some nice bits, some very nice bits, and some puzzling ones. Only time will tell if the very nice bits prevail, or if they've just been added as a cynical marketing exercise until the place gets a bit of sales momentum.

Coming

Aura is a very confusing place. Statistically it will be a suburb bigger than one of the larger cities in our state, and even more confusing its precincts are divided into what the developers call "suburbs".

I can't wait to see what the Post Office makes of that. For the time being, it's part of the Sunshine Coast - don't believe the publicity people!

But it does have some colourful spots.
