In days of old, plants were not a high priority in garden landscape. There was an adage that went "if you can't mow it, don't grow it".
Often a garden would consist of plants which had seen better days as pot plants indoors, and were simply stuck in the ground to see if they'd survive.

I guess that's the case here.
If you can't mow it, don't mow it ? Your commentary made me burst in laughter. I've seen such gardens in my neighborhood on the Central coast. How disconcerting in a country where a lot grows very easily! I remember throwing away a tomato in my garden and collecting new ones a few months later from the tomato plant that grew there. I couldn't believe my eyes!
Sorry, I meant to write 'If you can't mow it, don't grow it', as you did !
