At low tide on the Mooloola River the Soldier crabs are on the march. These are tiny crabs, ranging from pea size to maybe 15 mm across their bodies, and they run in regiments.
I'd often wondered at how the blue colour gave them any camouflage at all, but perhaps this view of them running across a patch of sand with a heavy mineral content gives a hint.

This is a great image. Were the seagulls lurking around looking for a feed, or were they all in the local KFC carpark looking to score some chips? :)
Although it sounds scary, we have stingrays that "mine" the waters edge once the numbers of crabs start to increase!
One day there will be heaps of crabs, the next, at low tide all we have is a mass of holes that look as though someone has been through with a shovel!
The seagulls don't have a chance!
