A Photo Every Day from the Sunshine Coast - Australia

Sneak Peek

Peering in through the lattice that encloses our library forecourt, I thought a sneak preview of what might be inside might whet a few appetites for tomorrow's theme day.

Pop back then and see what lies on the other side of the lattice.

Facilities

We are often quite justly critical of facilities provided by our local authority and state government, but I don't think anyone can complain about an all-weather boat ramp equipped with pontoon and fish cleaning tables complete with running water.

Trailers

It's a sure sign that the fish are biting when there are this many trailers still in the boat ramp park mid-morining on a working day.

Protection, Rubber, Call them what you will.

Old car tyres do a sterling job of keeping boats off the concrete, even if they do put black marks on white hulls.

Marinas

While wandering round the waterfront, it would be remiss not to add a photo of the pleasure boat fleet.  This one at the Mooloolaba Yacht Club Marina.   There is a small industry built around servicing pleasure boats as this is a rare safe port of call for those migrating to the experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef to our north.

Wharves

When the fleet come in, that's where they unload their catch, right at the door of the fish market.

Neat!

Trawlers

We have a small but quite active fishing fleet based in Mooloolaba.   These are prawn trawlers mostly fishing relatively close to shore, already in bed after a what was no doubt a long night.

The tuna fleet are out at the moment, far from shore.

At rest

I am such a lazy cynical photographer.  On days like today when the colour is all washed out and the subject matter fills he frame with a lifeless grey, I hit a button at random until I find a mix I like.

In this case it was called "Bleach Bypass".

Sea Grass

When the conditions are right the seagrass "clippings" was ashore.  Some say that they are a sign that the dugong have been active and are happily feeding in the beds, others say propellors cut up the grass and endanger the dugongs.

I say both could have an inkling of truth and I hope the former is the cause.

Mug!

My father may have shouted "mug" as this thoughtless person scooted by.

I'd barely noticed him being rather impolite by speeding through the moored boats until he saw me with a camera and slowed so suddenly he caught my eye.

So there guilty person, cool it in future eh?

Or "quite pretty" depending on your point of view.

Just made it.

Glad the last letter wasn't an "M" or a "W".  Sometimes when you have to judge how wide to make a word to fit it on the board, things just work out.

Board wade.

Well it can't be called a boar walk when it's underwater can it?

There'll be rain tonight and the creek will break out into the ocean on the high tide and normal transmission will resume.

Orange

This is what the robor flower looks like when it's out, and then it withers to a grey brushy mass.

Green.

I don't think I've ever photographed a Banksia robor flower in this half-baked state before.   I'm not sure I've even noticed one.    Here it is though, clearly green.

I hope it wasn't something I said!

Dicky Surf has been my go-to picture spot every time I think "it's been a while since I posted a photo of boards in a rack".

Today I discovered there were "off".   I never like to see a business closed, so it's a bit of a melancholy shot really.

Garage Sale Vote Now!

Every time there is an election or a garage sale or a party, a sign gets screwed onto the power pole at the corner of the street. Eventually the timber is entirely displaced by metal shards but I don't know what happens after that.

Left over hardware.

Gentlemen's pursuits

Newsagents and tobacconists the world over are similar, but I thought I'd take this photo and try again in say ten years to see what has changed, if indeed print magazines still exist in that time.

Can't see the cafe for the billboards.

Must look up the marketing book again and see what it says about this sort of thing!

Chilli Ride

"Can you eat them?" they ask and I always think you can eat anything, it's what they do to you after you've eaten them that's the problem.

But they look really nice beside the bike lane outside the Giggling Goat.

The signal station

View from the lighthouse it replaced, of the signal station that in turn was rendered defunct by the building in the reflection, which abolished its line of sight down the shipping channel.

Back on the lighthouse.

Two dollars gets one a climb to the top of the lighthouse and the signal station every second Saturday, and I thoroughly recommend it for even the faintest of hearts.

My City's Skyline

This month's theme was a super challenge for me.   There are at least a few skylines that are synonymous with the Sunshine Coast.

For instance, there are the Norfolk Pines that are silhouetted on the headlands, there are the outlines of the fledgling medium rise clusters in Mooloolaba and Maroochydore and perhaps Caloundra, but I really think the Glasshouses are what makes us different.

So there you have it, the Glasshouse Mountains are my city's skyline.  To see others on this City Daily Photo Theme Day, please visit our theme day gallery.
