Foreigners
That curious little plant with the largish leaves in the bottom centre, is an Australian native - Macaranga tanarius, a coastal rainforest tree that is a new-growth plant. It's job is to grow from a clearing and quickly shade the forest floor so that slow growing plants can come up beneath it.
I don't think there's much chance of it consuming those American desert dwellers though. They are indicative of that whole era of the sixties when California was everything we needed to aspire to!
