The Esplanade at Alexandra Headland is called the Esplanade because it runs along the shore front. Had I taken this photo from the other side of the road, you would have seen ocean, not buildings, just as you do from all of those balconies.

I'd never thought of the meaning of the word. There's a complex here called the Esplanade, but it doesn't run along any shore.
