A Photo Every Day from the Sunshine Coast - Australia

From the hinterland

A few days ago I posted a photo titled "Stags, Elks and Monsters".    If I'd adjusted the exposure just a little to ignore the heavy shade of the trees, this is what we would have seen.

The coast looms somewhere near the change of colour.  We can't sit in Montville looking down without remarking on how sparsely populated our town really is.

Clare and Michael

An old European tradition seems to be gaining a foothold here, no doubt (with the greatest of respect to Clare and Michael whose lock tells me they were celebrating their first anniversary), spurred on by commercial interests from interested parties such as the people making these heart shaped locks.

Originally the tradition had the lock clasped to a bridge stanchion on the wedding day of those concerned, and the key thrown into the water so that the bond could never be broken.

I am not sure what the symbolism in the barbed wire is.... hopefully it's not a reflection of that first year.

Roofscape

It's all fake, a pastiche as Kevin McCloud might say, new buildings that don't quite mimic the old in detail or proportion, but at the same time the result is not at all unpleasant so who cares?

Concerns

I am not at all concerned that this shop has metal sheep for sale, nor that anyone might actually buy one, but I am bothered quite a lot by the front fork on the bicycle beyond which appears to be welded on back to front!

It's possible to buy just about anything that spins in the wind at the whirligig  shop in Montville!

Road Signs - Australia Day

No, it's not a porcupine, it's an Echidna or spiny ant eater, and yes we do see them quite often trundling across the road.

This sign has a lovely graffiti touch to it, with the wobbly eye stuck on, and it has the merest hint of what was once a common sight - the impact of some sort of missile perhaps from a slingshot on the image itself.

Once, when guns were more easily available, many if not most road signs such as this were used as targets, often with the image of the animal so littered with the dents of bullets that it was obscured entirely.   It wasn't just the animal images though, if there was an "O" in a sign, it would be targeted as well.

Happy Australia Day!  (If that is an appropriate greeting, and I'm sure it isn't!)

The rooster question

Here it is, a life-sized chicken, made in some exotic country to our north no doubt, and rendered in baked enamel.   In the background is another and a rooster to watch over them.  They are for sale in a shop in Montville and while they look terrific, I can't help but wonder... what would I do with it?

Stags, Elks and Monsters

Staghorns, Elkhorns and Monsterio growing in the forest garden.   The monsterio is not a native, but  texturally it just slots in happily I think.

The post title?  Well we do have a propensity for shortening any name and that is how we'd refer to the above plants if we were in conversation.

Same View - Different Morning

I could get all misty eyed wondering how this can possibly be the same place as yesterday, the difference is extraordinary.   But it is.  Perhaps it's a little later, but not much, and of course the tide is in.

It makes getting up early a pleasure!

Ray of Hope

For the first time in almost seven years (gasp!) a few days or actually over a week of posts are missing!   I have no idea where they have gone, but shall restore them over the coming day or two!

The internet remains one of life's great mysteries, I think about it often as the sun rises over Moffat Beach.

Fan not fanning!

It was thirty-five degrees on the day I took this photo, yet the fan was stationary.

Perhaps we all felt that the reflections of the shaded bush beyond would be enough to provide sensory relief!

To the shops!

From the carpark in Montville to the shopping street is a pleasant shaded amble.  This I suspect is to lull one into a false sense of security.

Hold on to your wallet, there are shops beyond!

Cafe Ceilng

One of the most common comments I receive as an Australian travelling overseas relates to the dangers of life in this country.  Sharks, crocodiles, snakes and spiders all take their toll in the collective imaginations of those who have never visited.

One wonders, with those redback webs in the ceilings how we lived long enough to finish our coffee.

The View

I suppose it's been a while since I posted a snapshot of the Glasshouses.

It's difficult to go anywhere these days without having at least a little smoke haze from a stray fire somewhere in the vicinity.   Nothing dangerous in these parts, just enough to add a little blue to the light.

Not far to paddle

The break is so close to shore that there's almost no point in paddling through it.   Makes for a short ride though.

Morning Stretch

A few years ago when travelling in China it was quite a novel thing to watch as people exercised, played music and generally passed their time together in public parks.  This behaviour was simply not experienced on the home front.

Now, on any given morning or afternoon, and often in the middle of the day groups of people can be found in our beach front parks undertaking those very activities.

It's nice to see us taking advice from the oldest civilisation in the world!

Grubs!

Pumice, several varieties of leaf and seed pod, and a couple of varieties of cigarette butt.

And smokers wonder why those of us who don't smoke don't like them as a species!

On the other hand, often the people walking their dogs can be seen picking litter out of the flotsam and depositing it in their "deposit" bags.  More power to them!

What a difference a day makes!

No rain today as the morning cloud stays well out to sea, and at seven thirty the dogs are getting ready to leave the beach with their masters.

Today will be a busy day at the beach, the weather is sensational and for many it is the last day of their summer vacation.

Two more weeks and the school holidays will be over and we'll have the beach to our selfish selves again!

Welcome Rain

After weeks of clear skies and temperatures in the mid thirties, who would begrudge us a little rain and cooler weather?    One storm is enough to turn the lake back into a creek.  In a day or two its connection to the ocean will be lost and it will be a creek again.

Overcast, but quite nice!

Despite appearances, the breeze is warm, the temperature in the high twenties, and conditions are very pleasant on the beach today!

Interest

My father used to reckon that if someone was pointing vaguely out of picture it added interest to the composition.

I reckon it just looks as though they are fiddling with the horizon.

Getting There

I've been meaning to do a photo series on skateboards as transport.

Longboards, not little short trick things are a fairly common low-carbon commute.   I'm not sure about bare feet and bitumen at forty kilometres per hour though.

Under the Boardwalk

Actually this is over the boardwalk, under the road, and it's how I get to the beach each day.

It's a relatively pleasant spot to hang out with a fishing line apparently, although I never have.  Today the worst of the heat wave has passed, as have the greatest number of tourists, but the beach was even more crowded than yesterday.

I thought I'd spare everyone three crowded beach scenes in a row though.

Beach Report for Annie

The temperature almost made it to 40, and the people were innumerable!

Sadly for many, the northerly breeze also brought strong rips and a nasty chop which flattened out whatever swell there was.  The majority didn't care though, they were at the caravan park packing up and leaving at the end of their holiday.

Today was change over day!

Holidays!

Late afternoon waiting in the cool for the sun to go down, there are more people on the beach than one would normally expect, but the holidays are at a peak now.  Tomorrow the first wave of caravans and overloaded people movers will head out, leaving us once again to return to business as usual on Monday.

This year many businesses remain closed for an extra week, and of course they won't all go home until school starts for the new year later in the month.

In the meantime, if you can't beat them, join them.

I have!

Temperatures are reaching high thirties, UV index is at an incredible 14, and I can only dream of hanging my towel on a tree and lying around in the water because at the moment my days are filled by shovelling dirt as our yard renovations get underway.

But the beach is nice to think about.

New year reflection

I think for now I will be a little yellow leaf being carried by the wind and tide to who knows where.

The trees can stand firm with the same view every day as is their wish, but I will look forward to waking each day to a different perspective!
