Alley, not blind..

I shall have to try to return to this alleyway in Caloundra to check on progress.  Barely visible behind he structure on the left are the new shoots of what will one day hopefully become a 'green wall', and the  overhead structure is a web of cables designed to hold a substantial load of vine.

I hope the horticultural skills of the owners are sufficient to see the project to completion.

Although it may be stretching credibility, this truly is a jetski, roaring through the top of a pandanus!

Choosing Colours

Do designers of container ships research the routes their subjects will ply to ensure they are colour co-ordinated?

Perhaps they do.

Anzac Day

ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. On ANZAC day, ceremonies are held in towns and cities across the nation to acknowledge the service of our veterans.  From the Australian War Memorial
I intended to take a photo at the Centaur Hospital Ship Memorial, but it was raining and I saw this lone pine tree through the tears of the world, and it reminded me of the World War One battle of Lone Pine, so decided to make this my Anzac Day contribution.

When a plan comes together

There's the slightest of reverse curve on this building facade, which exaggerates the great scalloped shadow from the sunhood.

I like it when someone has put a bit of thought into something as simple as this and it works.

St George's Day

Today is St George's Day, a kind of 'National Celebration Day' in England and coincidentally, today we arrived in London at the beginning of our northern summer escapade.   Being of Welsh heritage, I guess I am obliged to be more inclined to barrack for the dragon than the slayer, but a bit of good natured support never goes astray.

We have more than our share of tourists from the old country, usually instantly recognisable by the glowing pink of their complexions unused to our UV index which reaches improbably high numbers all year round.

They are the ones without hats and with the lobster coloured heads.

Where are they?

Well the bustling crowds have certainly disappeared!   I've tried many time to capture the shaded atmosphere of the Bulcock Street markets but in previous attempts the crowds are always in the way.

Blue skies, heavy shade, no customers!

Next week will be busier.

Ship

From my travels in other parts of the world, I have a collection of photographs I have taken of details of ships and commercial barges.  Now I have one of a ginger cookie shop as well.

Sheep Factory

We didn't go on the adventure ride, but anywhere that New Zealanders are depicted as sheep, and the All Blacks can't score against the local side (even if the match hasn't started), can't be a bad place!

When I wonder, will the political police start correcting this?

Given New Zealand's celebrations at the moment having just legalised Gay Marriage, am I allowed to say the bloke on the right looks a bit ... gingery?

Highlights

Despite all it has to offer, our two year old thought the highlight of our visit to the Buderim Ginger Factory was when the hens chased after the train to catch bread thrown from it.

Not even the vanilla and ginger ice cream was as good as that.

Ginger Factory

I am not sure how to describe the Ginger Factory experience.  It's part edu-tourism, part theme park, part garden.

It's a pleasant place to spend an afternoon with the grandchildren though.

The Ginger Factory

The Buderim Ginger Factory, perhaps confusingly is not in Buderim at all, but in Yandina, having moved many years ago, but it still processes a LOT of ginger in any given day, and I suspect almost as many tourists as tonnes of product go through it's doors.

It's one of the Sunshine Coast's oldest tourist attractions, and the free admission price is worth that just for the quality of the gardens.

Spectators

Where there's a surf there's a spectator.

We happily spend hours on these rocks under the pandanus, just watching and wishing we were there.

Missed!

My camera has a touch sensitive screen.   Some time mid morning, while watching the surfing, I must have bumped it and this shot was the result.  Some rocks, a dried pandanus leaf and some grass.

Just thought I'd share that.

Almost..

Photographing surfing at Moffs has its own challenges.  For starters, the clean waves are early in the morning, when the sun is shining on the backs of the sufers.

This makes for lots of shots with green and blue water and what appear to be cardboard silhouettes on surfboards!

I know he looks as though he was distraught at his performance in the heat, but he was just wiping his brow as he left the water.  Honest!

Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Contest

I mentioned them in passing in December last, the Bendalls, international surfing legends.

The Ma and Pa Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest has been held each year since 1974, making it one of, if not the oldest competitions on the planet.

It Lives!

From out of the shadows, people start to move, food preparation begins, tee shirts and thongs are hung on racks to be sold to the surfing crowds.

In an hour the finals will be underway.
